Short Courses and Exemptions

The Northern Ordination Course is a three year programme of study which includes everything that the Church of England and the Methodist Church requires for ordination training. This three year part-residential course is equivalent to two years full-time study. The Course has modules and programmes within it which equip people for ordination on three levels:

Spiritual - Pastoral - Intellectual

Some candidates who have considerable levels of competence in these three areas before beginning ordination training may be eligible for a shortened course or for exemptions at least from some modules.

Shortened Courses

The Northern Ordination Course is happy to consider shortened courses for individual candidates. Instead of the full three year course it is possible for candidates to do one- or two-year courses in the light of their previous experience. Such courses, however, can only be arranged if the candidate has the official permission of their sending church. In the case of the Church of England such shortened courses need the official backing of the diocesan bishop who normally consults the Ministry Division for advice. In the case of the Methodist Church it is the Formation in Ministry office. Our External Examiner will approve shortened courses only when you have a degree in theology and/or extensive pastoral experience. In order to cover the curriculum adequately, it may be necessary for two year candidates to work more intensively.
